Man hit by train while reaching for bag at Stockwell London Underground station dies

A man who was hit by a London Underground train while bending down to pick up a bag from a platform has died, according to police.

The incident on 10 April at Stockwell station, south London, left John Burgess, 27, in a critical condition.

Police have now confirmed that Mr Burgess, from Dulwich, south London, died three days later on 13 April.

Witnesses on the scene said the horrific incident appeared to be an accident, as Mr Burgess was struck by a train as he reached down for the bag he was carrying.

Passengers at the station said they heard screaming coming from the platform and saw "blood everywhere" before they were evacuated from the station.

Emily Shackleton, a student, wrote on Twitter at the time: "Apparently the guy was hit by a tube at Stockwell when he leant over to get his bag."

Another commuter, Ryan Kelly said he could not "unsee what I saw" at the station.

A British Transport Police spokesman said today: “We can confirm that the man struck by a train at Stockwell London Underground station on Friday, 10 April, has since died in hospital.

“John Burgess, who was 27-years-old and from Dulwich, suffered serious injuries in the incident and passed away on Monday, 13 April.

“BTP officers are currently preparing a report for the coroner and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.“

An inquest into the incident has been opened and adjourned, police said.
