A routine visit to a Nottingham shopping centre ended in horror for one man today after he trapped his foot in an escalator and lost his toe.

The man, who witnesses say was in his 20s, was taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre following the incident.

The Environmental Health department of Nottingham City Council told the BBC that the escalator in the West End Arcade has now been closed down pending an investigation.
