Mile End fire: 17-year-old girl dies jumping from window to escape tower block blaze

A teenager has died after jumping from a fourth-floor window to escape a fire in East London.

The 17-year-old girl, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency workers.

She fell from a block of flats above a row of shops in Mile End after a fire broke out around 6am.

In a video, two passers-by rushed to help the girl shortly after she had jumped.

More than 20 firefighters attended the fire at St Paul’s Way and the blaze was brought under control around an hour later, by 7am.

Several people reportedly escaped the building before emergency workers arrived.

Residents were evacuated by emergency services and four people were treated for smoke inhalation.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told the Daily Mail, "One female, believed aged 17, was found outside the property - she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Four other people received treatment - none of them are serious. Enquiries into the circumstances of the fire are ongoing."

Police are investigating how the fire broke out.
