Most popular baby names of last year revealed as official list published

More than 6,000 Olivers and 5,000 Amelias were born last year, the Office for National Statistics said

Oliver and Amelia have been revealed as the most popular baby names in England and Wales for the second year in a row.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed 6,649 boys born in 2014 were named Oliver, while more than 5,800 were called Jack.

Other boys' names in the top 10 included Harry, Charlie, Thomas and George, which seems to be gaining popularity following the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first son in July 2013.

Amelia has been the most popular girls' name since 2011 and was given to 5,327 children last year. It was followed by Olivia, Isla, Emily and Poppy.

Sasha Miller, from the Baby Centre, said the statistics show that "traditional classics" remain popular with parents but that a growing royal trend can be seen.

"George is in the top 10, as are George's dad and uncle William and Harry all leading the country," she added. "With another royal baby born this year, it will be interesting if Charlotte trends in 2015."

She also noted a trend of girls' names ending in "a", such as Ava, Olivia and Isla.

ONS figures for 2013 showed Oliver and Amelia were the most popular names, while Oscar, George and Poppy were growing in popularity.

Amelia had been in the top spot since 2011, while Oliver knocked Harry, the most popular boys' name in 2011 and 2012, down the list.
