Motorists pay £135 million in fines for driving offences caught on CCTV
Motorists pay £135 million in annual fines for driving infringements recorded by CCTV cameras, it was reported.
More than 1.3 million fines were issued in 2011-12 for offences such as blocking box junctions or driving in bus lanes.
The RAC said the figures, a 16 per cent rise on the previous year, show that drivers are being targeted to boost council coffers, according to the Daily Mail.
“It really does look as though motorists are being used to raise revenue for cash-strapped councils,” Sarah Rice of the RAC’s press office was quoted as saying.
“It really does look as though motorists are being used to raise revenue for cash-strapped councils. Cameras need to be set up fairly and signed clearly so that drivers are not unduly punished for minor errors just to generate more money for the authorities. Motorists are generally law abiding and want to obey the rules.”
