New 999 text service
Texting the emergency services rather than dialling 999 could become commonplace after a successful pilot scheme by Ofcom.
The switch to a permanent scheme, after a two-year trial with 14,500 users, is designed to help those with hearing and speech impediments who have difficulty explaining the details of emergencies over the phone.
