New photos reveal massive scale of Crossrail project under London's streets

The Crossrail network is the biggest infrastructure project in Europe and currently has 10,000 people working beneath London's streets

Dozens of images have been released that show the incredible scale of the tunnels under London that will make up the new Crossrail network.

The pictures released yesterday by Crossrail, give a glimpse into some of the 23 miles worth of tunnels that run underneath the capital and make up Europe’s biggest infrastructure project.

According to Crossrail, the tunnelling is almost 90 per cent complete and six of the eight drilling machines, which have been drilling almost night and day for the last two years, have completed their drives.

Work now will begin on fitting the tunnels and the ten new stations in Central and South East London, wit line expected to be fully operational by 2018.

This, it is hoped, will relieve the pressure on London Underground and increase the capacity of London’s transport network by over 10 per cent.

Over 10,000 workers are currently working beneath the streets of London, and it is expected that the new train line will create an estimated 55,000 jobs for people across London and the South East.
