Night Tube: Jubilee line gets date for start of 24-hour service

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced the date the next tube line will begin all night weekend services.

The Jubilee line will begin 24-hour services on 7 October as part of a roll out of the Night Tube service across London Underground’s major lines.

It follows the success launch of the Night Tube on the Central and Victoria lines on 19 August which saw over 100,000 users on its first weekend.

The Night Tube, which runs on Fridays and Saturdays, will help to cut night-time journeys by an average of 20 minutes and could boost London’s economy by £77m a year.

Passenger data released by Transport for London shows more than 50 per cen of those using night buses in the capital were going to or from work.

Mr Khan said: “I was determined to get the Night Tube up and running as soon as possible, and I’m delighted the Jubilee Line will now begin on 7 October.

“There was huge excitement at the launch of the Central and Victoria Lines last Friday, and it’s already having a beneficial impact on our Night Time economy.

“The launch of the Jubilee line will support thousands more workers like nurses, cleaners, and people who work in our bars and restaurants – many of whom currently take two night buses to get home.

“It will also serve some of our city’s key venues, with The O2, Wembley Stadium and Stratford on route”.

The Night Tube was originally due to launch on 12 September 2015 under a scheme started by Mr Khan’s predecessor Boris Johnson.

But following several strikes organised by all four unions representing Tube workers - RMT, TSSA, Aslef and Unite - last summer Mr Johnson was forced to delay the rollout.

In March, London Underground agreed a pay and conditions deal with the biggest Tube worker union, RMT, which included a two per cent pay rise in year one, a further RPI inflation or 1 per cent (whichever is greater) rise in years two and three, followed by RPI plus 0.25 per cent or 1 per cent in year four.

In addition, staff on the lines where the Night Tube will run - Central, Victoria, Northern, Piccadilly and Jubilee - were given a bonus of £500.
