Remembrance Day: Owner of war medals discovered near the Cenotaph reportedly found following online appeal

The owner of a set of war medals discovered near the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday has reportedly been found.

An online appeal had been launched by Facebook user Cliff Palmer after he found them on the floor during yesterday's commemorative service.

He posted an image of the medals on the social networking site and wrote: “Please everyone, if you have an elderly veteran relative who was in London today, can you check they have not lost their medals? Please like and share this message far and wide so owner and medals can be reunited. Thank you.”

He added: “[I] would love to return them to the owner as I know I'd be distraught if I lost mine”.

According to BBC News presenter Simon McCoy the owner was found this morning.

Yesterday’s service saw the Queen leading the nation in honouring those who have died fighting for their country in armed conflict. Royals, political leaders and veterans assembled around the memorial in Whitehall to mark a two-minute silence at 11am, marked at its beginning and end by the firing of a 13-pounder First World War gun.

The 'particularly poignant' 100th service falling on the 100th anniversary of the First World War took place amid fears of a heightened terror threat.
