The Duchess of Cambridge’s new child has been born, weighing in at a healthy 8lb 3oz.

The new royal baby is a little lighter than her brother, Prince George, who weighed 8lb 6oz at birth.

Prince George was the heaviest future king in 100 years when he was born in 2013.

Prince William weighed just 7lb 1.5oz, considerably less than both his children, when he was born in 1982.

While the current heir to the throne, Prince Charles, weighed 7lb 6oz when he arrived in 1948.

The weight of the Queen and previous monarchs at birth was not released, as it was deemed too personal at the time.

Newborn babies in the UK have been increasing in weight for a number of years and the average weight nows stands at about 7lb 8oz, less than the two most recent royal babies.

The princess, who is fourth in line to the throne, was born at the exclusive Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.

News of the birth was announced on Twitter and the official details will have been placed on an easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.
