Seven-year-old girl killed in car crash

A seven-year-old girl was killed today and a woman is fighting for her life after a two-car collision, police said.

A Peugeot, carrying the girl and driven by the woman, collided with a silver Mercedes on the A465 in South Wales at 11am.

Two women travelling in the Mercedes suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on an eastbound section of what is known as the Heads of the Valleys road, between Brynmawr and Gilwern.

All four people involved in the accident were taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.

"The vehicles involved were a blue Peugeot carrying a female adult and child and a silver Mercedes carrying two females," a Gwent Police spokesman said.

"All occupants were conveyed to Nevill Hall Hospital.

"The seven-year-old girl travelling in the Peugeot sustained life-threatening injuries and has since been pronounced deceased.

"The female adult in the same vehicle sustained serious head injuries and currently remains in a life-threatening condition.

"The two occupants of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries."

He said the road was closed in both directions between Gilwern and the Conoco roundabout while emergency services were in attendance.
