UK weather: Severe weather warnings and flood alerts issued

The mini hot spell is about to be over with flood alerts and severe weather warnings issued for much of the UK in the coming days.

On Monday, The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for heavy, thundery showers for Northern Ireland, encompassing County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry and County Tyrone.

In Wales, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Powys were also issued warnings.

From Tuesday, everywhere in England and Wales except Humberside, Lincoln, Norfolk, Suffolk, Nottinghamshire, Devon and Cornwall and parts of South Wales will be subject to a yellow flood warning.

However, despite the wide area the warnings are in place for, not everywhere will be affected and flooding will be localised.

Also on Tuesday, two separate severe weather warnings are in place from 1pm for the East Midlands, the East of England, London and South East England and the West Midlands.

A warning from 2pm on Tuesday is in place for parts of Northern England and Scotland. Yorkshire & Humber, North East England and North West England will be affected, as will Scotland Central, Strathclyde, Tayside and Fife, Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and Borders and Highlands and Eilean Siar.

In some places there is potential for 20 mm of rain in an hour, and rain could turn torrential and 50 mm may fall in just a few hours.

Northern Ireland and northern Wales will remain at risk from heavy rain.

Later in the week, showers will continue and temperatures will fall, but some sunny spells will continue.
