Former Q Radio breakfast show host is survived by wife and two children

A BBC presenter has died suddenly at the age of 47.

Stephen Clements joined BBC Radio Ulster last summer after a long stint presenting Q Radio’s breakfast show.

The presenter, from Carrickfergus, is survived by his wife Natasha and their children Poppy and Robbie.

Announcing Mr Clements’ death on Tuesday, Peter Johnston, director of BBC Northern Ireland, said: “We are sorry to bring you the sad news of the passing of our colleague, Stephen Clements.

“Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family, friends and colleagues, at this difficult time.”

Having turned Q Radio’s breakfast show into one of the most popular programmes in the region, the presenter landed what he described as his “dream” job at the BBC last year.

He worked as a presenter for BBC NI’s coverage of The Open golf championship at Royal Portrush in July, and in September became the new host of Radio Ulster’s mid-morning show.

Mr Clements studied geography at university and lived in South Korea for a time, where he taught English, the BBC reports.

He was also patron of Autism NI, which was one of many to post tributes online.

The charity said: “Autism NI are saddened to hear the sad passing of our patron Stephen Clements.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family and friends. Stephen was a great supporter for autism across Northern Ireland.”

Q Radio tweeted: “We are heartbroken today to learn that our former Q Radio Breakfast show host, colleague and friend Stephen Clements has died suddenly at the age of 47.”

Arlene Foster, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), also expressed her sadness.

She tweeted: “Absolutely devastating news. Have been a fan since Q days. We were in touch over Christmas & New Year.

“An incredible talent who was always willing to help others. Please keep his wife, little children and wider family in your prayers.”
