Storm Desmond: Major incident in Cumbria as flooding bursts through River Greta defences
Residents have been told to 'get to a non-flood risk area and stay inside'
Police in Cumbria have declared a major incident as Storm Desmond brings severe flooding to the region, with rivers bursting through defences.
Homes and businesses in Cumbria have been evacuated and police say they are engaged in a number of rescue operations involving people trapped in vehicles stuck in flood water. Authorities have set up centres where affected residents can find refuge.
The Met Office has issued a red alert for severe weather in some parts of the country, warning that loss of life could be possible as strong winds and heavy rainfall continue.
Cumbria is amongst the worst affected areas, with the River Greta near Keswick and the River Eden at Appleby overflowing, despite flood defences having been installed. Police have warned motorists not to drive unless “absolutely necessary” and advised that locals: “get to a non-flood risk area and stay inside.” They added that roads surrounding Keswick are closed.

Roads are entirely flooded and impassable, whilst businesses and homes are partially submerged in the flood water.
Elsewhere, more than 80 flood warnings are in place around the UK, particularly Scotland, northern England, Wales and the Midlands.
