An investigation has been launched after a teenager died and three people were injured when a speedboat capsized in the Devon fishing port of Brixham.

Emergency services responded to calls made at 11.44 on Saturday morning that a vessel had capsized with people on board. Lifeboats, coastguard teams, a helicopter and specialist divers were deployed as part of the rescue effort.

The boat had been carrying a father, his daughter and two school friends in the Torbay marina.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a 16ft speed boat upside down and a girl trapped in it.

Mark Criddle, coxswain of Torbay’s RNLI lifeboat, said: “We located the girl and brought her onboard the lifeboat where she was immediately given first aid by a doctor and paramedic who were members of the lifeboat crew.

“We took the girl back to shore where she was handed into the care of paramedics who took her to hospital.”

The father and two other teenagers were rescued by other craft in the harbour.

“The three other people who had been aboard the overturned speedboat were also taken to hospital after being treated at the lifeboat station,” Criddle added.

The identity of the deceased teenager has not been released but her next of kin have been informed, officials said.

Police are now calling for witnesses of the incident to get in touch.

A spokesperson said: “We would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, either on the water or walking along the cliffs or seashore and witnessed the incident, to call us on 101 and quote log number 326 02/05/2015.”
