An investigation is under way after a man of 62 was killed in an industrial accident at a chipboard plant in Merseyside.

Police said the man, from Manchester, suffered serious injuries and died at the plant in Kirkby on Saturday morning.

Inquiries established that he was an employee of a subcontractor working in a segregated area of the Sonae factory, said a spokesman for Merseyside Police. His next of kin were informed and family liaison officers were providing assistance.

The death follows an incident last December when two workers died after they fell into a machine at the same factory.

An investigation has been launched by the police and the Health and Safety Executive.
