At least five people have been injured after a car crashed into a tram in Wolverhampton at the height of rush hour.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene of the accident at Bilston Street Island, where four people from the tram and a female driver were treated for injuries.

The woman, who was taken to hospital, had to be cut out of her vehicle, which overturned on the ring road following the collision at around 8.30am on Monday.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: "Three of our crews responded to this collision between a car and tram. Firefighters used cutting equipment to free a woman from the car. Of 25 passengers on the tram, three plus the driver treated at scene for suspected minor injuries."

The tram was left with major damage after it was knocked off the tracks as it crossed a roundabout, the Express and Star reported.

West Midlands Metro said there was no service between Wolverhampton St George's tram stop and Priestfield. The Star said there were long delays on roads in the city centre.
