UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

Britain is braced to be hit by the remnants of Hurricane Oscar after large parts of the country were blasted with sub-zero temperatures.

Britain saw its coldest evening of the autumn overnight on Sunday evening, when a low temperature of -5.9C was recorded in Katesbridge, Northern Ireland.

One of the chilliest October nights in Britain for several years, parts of Cumbria and Scotland also saw the mercury plummet below -5C.

Slightly milder conditions are on the way for most for the start of the week, although temperatures are still expected to be lower than average for the time of year.

However, by the end of the week, the UK will be hit by the remains of Hurricane Oscar, causing potential disruption for many.

“Some manifestation of Hurricane Oscar will be heading our way on Friday and Saturday, although it is unlikely to still be a hurricane by the time it reaches us,” said Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates.

“It does mean however there could be some disruptive weather over the weekend and it may even warrant a named storm.”

The Met Office is likely to monitor the situation as the weekend approaches to determine whether to issue weather warnings in certain areas.

Before then, showers are expected to arrive in easterly areas on Monday evening before pushing further to the west, while snow is possible in the mountains of Scotland.

“It has been pretty cold, Saturday was one of the coldest October days for a decade – only the warmest places saw the temperature creep into double figures,” Mr Keates added.

“But, if you are sick of the cold the good news is it does not look like that is set to last too long.”

Temperatures are expected to pick up slightly on Tuesday, but highs of around 8 to 10C are still slightly below average for the time of year.

Western areas should see a dry and bright day on Tuesday, but the east is set for overcast conditions and frequent showers.
