UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

The UK can expect a mix of sunny spells and showers as it approaches another weekend in lockdown, forecasters have said.

More rain is predicted to fall across the country over the next two days following downpours on Wednesday.

“There is pretty much a chance of seeing a shower anywhere on Thursday,” a Met Office spokesperson said, “but the heaviest are generally looking to be around the southern half of the UK.”

Areas with heavy rain could also experience some thunder or hail, Bonnie Diamond told The Independent.

Brighter spells are also forecast across the country on Thursday – although not as warm than some of the weather the UK has enjoyed while under lockdown.

Central, northern and eastern areas could reach 15C in the peak of the sunshine on the final day of April, Ms Diamond said.

“Things start to settle down a little bit on Friday,” she told The Independent.

“It is still very much a case of sunny spells and showers, but there looks to be less of a risk of seeing those heavy showers and thunder.”

Warmer parts of the UK could reach 17C on Friday, although the UK could generally expect to fall between 13C and 15C, she said.

The UK has experienced showers this week after a run of dry and sunny weather that brought misery to people ordered to stay indoors to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

Some flood alerts are in place for parts of southern England as the rain is forecast to continue, including near Newbury in Berkshire, High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and Alton in Hampshire.

The mixed weather over the next few days comes as the UK approaches its sixth weekend in lockdown.
