UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

Storm Ali is set to bring gusts of up to 80mph across parts of the UK as the remnants of Storm Helene move on.

The Met Office has issued a warning for windy weather across Northern Ireland, Scotland, the north of England and Wales for Wednesday.

Forecasters cancelled a wind warning for Tuesday after gusts from Storm Helene failed to meet the threshold to merit a warning.

However, the alert for Wednesday warns of injuries and danger to life from flying debris and will remain in place from 6am to 10pm.

The Met Office also warned that damage to buildings, power cuts, road closures and transport cancellations are possible.

Dean Hall, a meteorologist at the Met Office, told The Independent the UK had seen gusts of around 30-40mph on Tuesday morning, but said it was “nothing exceptional compared to what we were expecting” from Storm Helene.

“Storm Helene is now moving away northeastwards. It’s giving some rain across Scotland, northern England and Wales,” he said.

“As that continues to pull away northwards it will stay windy, with quite a brisk southwesterly wind to contend with today and gusts around some of the coasts.”

Mr Hall said winds of 70-80mph could be seen across western parts of Scotland on Wednesday, adding: “As a result we’ve got a yellow warning out for strong winds.”

He warned the windy spell could disrupt travel and cause trees and branches to fall.

Temperatures are predicted to remain above average for this time of year, with 24C possible in London on Tuesday after temperatures hit 26C in the capital on Monday.
