Storms arrive after days of warm weather

The UK was battered by storms overnight following a period of record breaking sunny weather over the past few days.

This impressive video shows fork lightning cutting through the night sky over Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said local resident Joe Trigg, 26, who sent this video to The Independent.

“Sheet lightning is fairly common, but watching fork lightning like this was incredible, if not a little scary!”

“I was at the front of the house when I heard the thunder bellowing over the hill out the back. I just instinctively grabbed my phone and started recording.”

The tumultuous weather overnight comes after days of sun and high temperatures across the country.
