UK weather: Heavy rain and strong winds to hit some areas

Parts of Scotland could see 80mm of rainfall on Armistice Day

Parts of the UK will be lashed by heavy rain and strong wind on Wednesday, with some localised flooding possible in western Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain along the west coast of Scotland and for a central band stretching across the country between Perth and Aberdeen.

Many of these areas are likely to see 50mm of rainfall over the course of Armistice Day, while more exposed parts of Dumfries and Galloway could have as much as 80mm.

Aidan McGivern, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “It’s a wet and windy Wednesday for north-western parts of the country, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Drier at first for England and Wales, rain reaching here later in the day.”

The unsettled conditions come as a result of a slow-moving weather front, which will bring “an awful lot of wet weather” for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Mr McGivern added.

It will largely be dry, if grey, elsewhere in the UK until later on in the day, before heavy rain and gusty winds sweep across to the east.

This lively weather will mostly clear by the end of Wednesday night, leading to a bright start on Thursday across the UK.

However, there will be more wind and rain for Northern Ireland and Scotland by the end of the afternoon, as another band of weather reaches the UK.

Temperatures will be mild and will reach as high as 15C in London on Wednesday, while Thursday will be a cooler day with peak temperatures of 13C.
