Nearly all homes cut off from electricity over the Christmas period were due to be finally reconnected tonight – just in time for a renewed period of stormy weather.

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) said the remaining 130 properties without power across Britain were due to be restored by the end of evening. Recent storms resulted in about 75,000 homes being disconnected and widespread travel disruption.

Forecasters warned that a fresh front of heavy rain would hit south-west England, Wales and parts of central and south-west Scotland from Monday. Strong winds were also predicted for London and the South- east.

New Year’s Eve will then see another band of rain pushing across the country from the west. A Met Office spokesman said: “The public should be aware of the risk.”
