Virgin Media down: Internet and TV hit by major outage during England v Ireland rugby match

Virgin Media has apologised after its TV and internet services were hit by a major outage during the England v Ireland rugby match.

Fans bombarded the company with complaints after coverage of the Six Nations game was affected by a fault on the network.

“Hey @richardbranson - are you enjoying the Rugby?”, asked one Twitter user on Sunday afternoon, above a picture of a scrambled TV screen.

”Thousands of your @virginmedia customers aren’t!”

The official Virgin Media twitter account replied to complaints with a message saying that the issue was being investigated.

“Apologies for the inconvenience,” the message adds. “Rest assured we’re working hard to fix it and we aim to get things done as fast as we could. Please bear with us.”

The same fault also affected football fans hoping to watch Arsenal play Everton.

Attempts to check the service status on the Virgin website were redirected to a page titled “We’re making some essential changes.”

“We’re doing some work on My Virgin Media at the moment as part of an upgrade to provide you with an even better service,” it reads.

“Everything will be back to normal again soon, so please come back and try again shortly.”

The company also urged customers to try and use the TV Go app to continue streaming.

According to the Downdetector website, most problems were reported in the south east of England.
