Kent grandmother runs herself over after forgetting to put handbrake on

A woman has been run over by her own car after she got out of the vehicle without properly putting the handbrake on.

The unnamed woman pulled up in front of Chris Puxted’s house in Tenterden, Kent, where he was selling eggs using a small stall and honesty box at the end of his drive.

His CCTV captured the incident.

The alarming footage shows the grey-haired woman standing at the stall, apparently examining the eggs, before her car, parked several yards behind her, begins to slowly sidle forwards.

With her back turned and her attention focused on the eggs, she has no warning her car is silently approaching.

It picks up momentum, and then makes impact with the backs of her legs, mowing her into the egg stall. The flimsy structure is flattened and the woman is deposited face-down upon the wreckage, presumably among the sticky remnants of the eggs.

Fortunately, the verge against which the egg stall had been standing stops the car’s unexpected movement before it can squash her, and it comes to a halt – hazard warning lights flashing.

She appears to emerge relatively unscathed, and picking splinters of wood from herself, gets to her feet and reverses the car off the razed egg-stall.

However, the footage suggests the victim had no intention of driving off without the eggs she came for. She returns to the flattened structure, picks out six undamaged eggs, puts them in a box, gets back in her car and drives off.

Chris Puxted, whose CCTV recorded the incident, told Caters’ News Agency: “It just goes to show, you should never forget to put your handbrake on.

“It just sneaked up on her so she had no chance.

“Fortunately, it doesn’t look like there was any lasting damage.”

The same cannot be said for his egg stall.

The incident is reminiscent of another notable self-inflicted car accident, in which pop star Brian Harvey of East 17, fell out of the car he was driving after, he claimed, he had eaten too many jacket potatoes.

He said the 2005 incident occurred after he opened the car door so he could lean out of the vehicle to be sick.

He claimed he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, which threw him out of the car and under its wheels. He suffered a broken pelvis, collapsed lung and was in a coma for several weeks.
