A Protestant man in his thirties was shot dead by gunmen who broke down the door of his home in the Crumlin Road area of north Belfast.
Responsibility for the killing was claimed by the Irish National Liberation Army, a republican splinter group which has resumed violence after months of virtual inactivity. The group claimed its victim was a member of the loyalist Ulster Defence Association.
The shooting brings this month's death toll in Northern Ireland to six.
