The Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, told of the 'courage of Gerry Adams . . . and the IRA' as he received an honorary doctorate at St Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He urged loyalist paramilitaries to join the ceasefire: 'The search for peace is not just a desirable political goal but a moral imperative.'
