An American Airlines jet was grounded at Manchester airport an hour before it was due to take off for Chicago after a security officer reported seeing a mouse in the business class section.

A spokesman said a pest control firm found evidence of droppings, but no mouse.

The 323-seat MD-11 aircraft was flown empty to its base in Dallas where it will be examined.
