Labour stepped up its offensive on the Government's tax record, claiming that a typical family will pay an extra pounds 1,330 over the next two years.
Recalling Tory warnings during the election campaign about Labour's tax plans, Gordon Brown, the shadow Chancellor, said: 'The real tax rises are even higher than the fictitious claims about Labour's plans.' The Government had broken its promises and was guilty of 'hypocrisy and unrivalled deceit'.
