Helen Liddell, 43, the former Scottish Labour Party secretary, was last night chosen as the candidate for the Monklands East by-election, the contest caused by death of the Labour leader, John Smith. Mrs Liddell won on the first count at the constituency Labour party meeting in Airdrie.
The three candidates were Mrs Liddell; Tom McCabe, 40, leader of Hamilton district council and chairman of the local government committee of Labour's Scottish executive; and Ian Smart, 35, a solicitor who is campaign coordinator in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth constituency party.
