Law Update: Access to justice

The Young Solicitors Group has called on the Government, lawyers, and the courts to protect the basic human right of access to justice.

In a paper published this week, the group claims that the changes in legal aid will deny citizens the right to choose their own lawyers and lead eventually to state-funded and state-controlled defence lawyers.

Lawyers must act together to ensure that all clients obtain a high- quality service, says the paper, and the courts must respond not just to the judiciary, but must also take into account the needs of the public it serves.
