New selection procedures to be introduced next year by the Council of Legal Education will mean that 25 per cent fewer students - 750 compared with 1000 this year - will be accepted for the Bar vocational course. The new system will also involve entrance examinations. The moves were largely prompted by a sharp rise in applications for the course, without a corresponding increase in the number of pupillage places available.
