An 'elderly client handbook' has been published by the Law Society as a practical guide for solicitors. It is written by Gordon Ashton, a district judge and a member of the society's mental health and disability sub-committee. The guide covers all relevant issues from financial management, community care and civil status to advance directives, death and inheritance.
The handbook is published as part of a Law Society initiative to encourage solicitors to develop their services to the elderly. A consultation paper has also been issued to local law societies to promote discussion with voluntary organisations and pensioners' groups on ways in which improved legal services can be provided to the elderly.
