Simon Allport, a solicitor with City firm Gouldens, has been seconded to the Takeover Panel as an assistant secretary. He is the first solicitor to be appointed to the post, which usually takes on stockbrokers, accountants, civil servants or clearing bank staff. Mr Allport will be part of a team responsible for fielding enquiries from professionals involved in takeovers, as well as from members of the public.
