Life for killer who faced death
The last man in Britain condemned to hang for murder had the sentence cut to life imprisonment on retrial on the Isle of Man yesterday.
Tony Teare, 24, was sentenced to death in Douglas two years ago for the contract killing of Corrine Bentley, 22. He was paid pounds 600 to cut her throat.
The death penalty was imposed months before the island abolished capital punishment for murder. Teare won a retrial but was ordered to serve at least 12 years after again being convicted.
