Three men convicted of robbery were cleared yesterday after the Court of Appeal was told that interviews in which they admitted the crime had been rewritten by officers from the disbanded West Midlands Serious Crime Squad.

Raymond Fryer, 35, and Elvis Jeffers, 36, were jailed for five years in April 1987 for a pounds 12,000 bank raid in Birmingham. Adolphus Francis, 32, got five years to run concurrently with a 12-year sentence imposed for another robbery.

The case was referred back to the Court of Appeal following an investigation by West Yorkshire Police into Crime Squad activities.
