Compensation payments totalling pounds 122m have been paid by the Ministry of Defence over the past five years, the Armed Forces Minister Nicholas Soames disclosed. The figure of pounds 57m for 1994/95 included pounds 35m paid to ex-servicewomen sacked for becoming pregnant. A Labour spokesman condemned the payments as resulting from "mismanagement on a grand scale".
