Nearly one-quarter of all children are living on or below the poverty line, double the number that existed when the Conservatives came to power in 1979, according to a study of official incomes figures by the Child Poverty Action Group.
Its analysis shows that in 1989 there were 2.76 million children - 22 per cent of all minors - living on or below income support level, compared with 1.5 million in 1979.
