The widow of Robert Osborne, a musician who was killed when he tried to stop a teenager vandalising a car near his home in Streatham, south- west London, in 1992 has been refused compensation for his death by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

A spokeswoman for the charity Victim Support said: 'We believe the authority is arguing a crime was not committed . . . we are seeking legal advice on appealing.' Joseph Elliott, 19, was cleared at the Old Bailey of murder and manslaughter last July after pleading self-defence.
