A SERIOUS deterioration in the health of Beverley Allitt, the childrens' nurse charged with murdering four of her patients, caused the adjournment yesterday of her trial at Nottingham Crown Court, writes Jonathan Foster.
Ms Allitt, 24, is anorexic. She had been held at Rampton secure hospital, Nottinghamshire, where her condition worsened last Friday, James Hunt QC, Ms Allitt's counsel, told the jury. Defence lawyers will visit her today at another hospital, and the court will be told on Thursday if she is fit to attend the trial.
Ms Allitt has pleaded not guilty to the murder in 1991 of four children being treated at Grantham and Kesteven district hospital. She also denies the attempted murder of nine other children, an elderly woman and a teenage boy.
