A 14-year-old girl attacked on her village paper round was the victim of a brutal rape, police said yesterday.

The girl had just delivered her last newspapers in Lanchester, Co Durham, and was walking home down an alleyway when a man wearing a ski mask grabbed her from behind, dragged her into a garden and viciously beat her. She was in hospital yesterday with severe bruising. Police said she was so traumatised that she could remember very little about the daylight attack.
