Passengers on the Woolwich Ferry viewing the Thames Barrier, in operation yesterday when the pounds 500m flood defence system's 10 steel gates were raised for a day to test its efficiency against a high tide. During the annual test the water level below the barrier reaches a height of almost 4m (13ft) above its up-river level
