A POLICEMAN who befriended an 81-year-old widow then stole pounds 26,000 from her bank account was given a nine-month jail sentence yesterday.

PC Nigel Mills, 30, took Mrs Lillian Reed's savings after being sent to investigate a burglary at her home.

Alastair Malcolm, for the prosecution, told Winchester Crown Court that after Mills found that bank books and other documents said to have been stolen were held by solicitors dealing with the estate of Mrs Reed's late husband, he told relatives he would keep an eye on her.

Mills, of Bournemouth, Dorset, admitted stealing cheques from Mrs Reed between August and October 1991.
