Two police officers were shot last night after stopping a motorcycle during a routine patrol, Scotland Yard said.

A Suzuki motorcycle pillion passenger opened fire in Brixton, south London, hitting one officer in the leg and the other in the back. Both men were described as serious but stable last night.

Armed police were hunting the gunmen. 'It is understood at least two shots were fired,' a spokesman said.
