Alcoholics face benefits cut
Alcoholics will be denied benefits unless they seek help for their addictions under plans being examined by the Government. Some drug addicts are already forced to accept treatment in return for benefits.
James Purnell, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said he had now ordered officials to see if the scheme could be expanded to include those suffering from alcohol addiction. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people with drug or alcohol problems claim benefits.
"We are going to look at the arrangements for alcoholics on benefits, just as we did for problem drug users, so that people get the help they need to get sober, get their life back and get back to work," said Mr Purnell.
