London Mayor Boris Johnson has defended his decision to run for parliament while still Mayor by describing the mayoralty role as being “administrative”.

Comparing his role as London Mayor to that of the Prime Minister or the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Johnson said there was “no reason at all why someone couldn’t do a very good job as an MP whilst also doing a colossal administrative role.”

Johnson resigned from the Shadow Cabinet in 2007, winning the mayoralty in 2008.

“What I said to them was that I would help to lead the city out of a recession,” Johnson claimed.

“What’s happened since then obviously is that the Conservatives have been doing much better,” he said.

“The ideas I want to advance are gaining ground I think that there’s a very good chance we will be in power again,” he finished by saying.
