Grenfell Tower resident: Corbyn has done so well "because he's one of us"

A resident of Grenfell Tower has praised Jeremy Corbyn and labelled him “one of us” after he came to visit the local community.

The man, who said his name was Nadir, was critical of Theresa May’s response to the fire that that ripped through a 24-storey building in Kensingston.

But he was full of praise for the Labour leader who spent time talking to those in the area who had been affected by the incident.

“I wanted to know why Theresa May hasn’t come," he told Sky News. "Yes she might have come and spent time here visiting the people who are working in here but meeting the victims is the most important thing.

“Corbyn came here and walked around as if he is one us. That’s how it is. That’s why he has been so successful. Because he is one of us."

The Labour leader spoke with volunteers and members of the local community during a visit to St Clements Church, which is being used as a refuge centre.

He promised "the truth has got to come out and it will" during the visit.

Many were outraged when Ms May carried out a private visit to the scene and spoke with emergency service crews but reportedly refused to meet any survivors and blocked media access.

After receiving widespread criticism, the Prime Minister did visit survivors in hospital the following day, speaking with patients for almost an hour.

Police said 30 people had died, including at least one person who was taken to hospital.

More than 70 people are believed to be unaccounted for, although police fear was so devastating that some victims may never be identified.
