Labour defied the trend to make its first council by-election gain of 2009.

Candidate Rohini Simbodyal snatched a seat from Tories at Jubilee ward in north London's Enfield Borough.

This cuts Conservatives' majority on the authority to three.

The Tories defended another marginal in the capital when they won at Waddon, Croydon Borough.

But, in a big shift to Labour, Conservatives saw their majority slashed at Cannock West in Staffordshire's Cannock Chase District.
