The Lords last night backed a Bill aimed at extending the scope of Home Office grants to local councils with large ethnic minority communities. The Local Government (Amendment) Bill, piloted by Labour's Lord McIntosh of Haringey and supported by ministers, was given an unopposed Second Reading.
It would extend the provisions of the Local Government Act 1966, which allows councils to apply for special funding for projects benefiting immigrants from the New Commonwealth, to include any ethnic minority.
