Man in court over policeman's death

A man will appear in court today charged in connection with the death of an off-duty policeman.

Mike Silcock, 30, who worked for Greater Manchester Police, was knocked down by a car on Didsbury Road in Heaton Mersey, near Stockport, at 11.30pm on Friday March 6.

He had enjoyed a night at a pub with his brother.

Mr Silcock was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital with serious head injuries but died a short time later.

Stephen Benson, 25, of no fixed abode, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and conspiracy to commit fraud.

He is due before Stockport Magistrates' Court this morning.
